British Tamil artist Arjun Coomaraswamy recently dropped the music video to ‘Vaadi’ and within a week it has crossed the 1 million view mark.
Taken from Closer to home, the highly anticipated 10 track debut album by Arjun is being released through his music label ‘Island Records’ on the 2nd March 2018.
Island is home to Drake, Mary J Blige, Nicki Minaj & Sean Paul to name but a few! He is the first artist of South Asian origin on their roster.
ARJUN has sampled the popular Tamil (Gaana / Kuthu / Tamil folk) song ‘Vaadi Vaadi Nattukkattai’ by music producer Vidyasagar Ramachander. The song featured in the 2001 Kollywood film ‘Alli Thandha Vaanam’ starring the king of Tamil dance Prabhu Deva. Island Records went through official channels and paid the copyright owner (Best Audio) for the rights to sample the song.
Over the years ‘Vaadi Vaadi Nattukkattai’ has been sampled by different music producers across India. However Arjun remains a fan of the original Tamil version sung by the legendary Shankar Mahadevan & Sujatha Mohan.
The music video directed by Hasinth Pathirana via skype, was shot in London, Ghana and Sri Lanka!
British Tamil dancer and choreographer Jeya Raveendran aided Arjun with the dance segments. His choreography was performed by Arjun and the dance crews – the Gaana Rajas in London & KG Twins in Sri Lanka. The Pièce De Résistance, Ghanaian children dancing to Gaana!
The video also features a wonderful solo performance by Canadian dancer Anoshinie who was in London at the time to judge Kings of Gaana 2017.
The video is a window into Arjun’s journey through the music scene, his British Asian lifestyle, his Tamil heritage and the spread of his music through Africa and across the globe.
We look forward to the release of Closer to home, which is out on the 2nd March. Support Tamil talent by pre-ordering your digital copy of Arjun’s album today.
