Brin Pirathapan wins Masterchef UK 2024

British Tamil chef and Veterinary Surgeon Brin Pirathapan is crowned winner of Masterchef 2024.

Reacting to his MasterChef win, Brin said: “I’m absolutely chuffed to bits. I can’t breathe! I’m a big mix of my background, my culture and all the opportunities my parents have given me.

“They’ve been incredible and I’ve done it for them as much as I’ve done it for myself. The experience itself has been incredible and to top it off with this is just the most amazing thing, ever.”

29 year old Dr Brinthen Pirathapan is a veterinary surgeon based in Bristol. He was born in Ilford and grew up in Essex, before heading to Bristol for his degree.

“The areas of cooking I love are truly an amalgamation of my Tamil Sri Lankan heritage and my British upbringing. I have a passion for creating dishes with bold flavours but refining them to high standards with European techniques.I like to pull flavour combinations from all over the world and create balanced dishes.

My love for food and cooking started to properly develop when I went to university. My student budget didn’t allow for fancy food, so I wanted to learn to make delicious meals myself without breaking the bank. That’s when I realised I had a passion for cooking, not just eating!

Cooking definitely runs in my family. My parents grew up in Sri Lanka and are great cooks, so I’ve been lucky enough to be treated to amazing Tamil Sri Lankan flavours throughout my life. This gave both my brother and I a passion for flavour.”

Since beginning his Masterchef televised journey  in April 2024, viewers and judges have been continuously impressed by Brin’s incredible dishes. His culinary skills, flair and confidence in the kitchen, has developed and excelled every stage of the competiton which has an estimated UK viewership in the millions.

“I’ve watched MasterChef for as long as I can remember. The show is one of the reasons I’m the cook I am today. I’d love to have a future in the food industry. Waking up every morning knowing that I’m doing something I absolutely love would be a great feeling. I want food to take me all over the world and I feel like I’ve got so much more to learn.
