Young Tamil star Sharangi Gnanavarathan takes lead role in Annie

Taking her professional stage debut as Annie is 11-year-old Sharangi Gnanavarathan, a budding young Tamil star from South London.

The hit West-end musical “Annie” is on tour across the UK, and Sharangi has so far performed 15 shows since her debut in July.

Raised in a Sri Lankan Tamil household, Sharangi attends classes at Love Theatre Arts in Cheam.

She is also a student of Jeya Raveendran’s Dance Academy in London, learning popular Tamil dance styles via JRDA’s virtual classes which she started during the Covid-19 lockdown. She is looking forward to performing at JRDA’s annual dance show this autumn.

Annie the musical, is set in 1930s New York during The Great Depression. Brave young Annie is forced to live a life of misery at Miss Hannigan’s orphanage. Her luck soon changes when she’s chosen to spend a fairytale Christmas with famous billionaire, Oliver Warbucks. Meanwhile, spiteful Miss Hannigan has other ideas and hatches a plan to spoil Annie’s search for her true family.

Sharangi is sharing the lead role with two other young stars, which allows them to manage a healthy school & family life balance throughout the UK tour.

You can catch Sharangi performing in Dublin this August (6 days) and Manchester in September (6 days). In October she is traveling for shows in Wolverhampton, Sheffield and Belfast. On the 9th, 10th and 11th November she is performing at the New Wimbledon Theatre in London.
