A Gun & A Ring – Canadian Tamil film premieres in Shanghai

Directed by Canadian Tamil director Lenin M. Sivam, A Gun & A Ring, has been nominated for the prestigious Golden Goblet Award at the 16th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF). This movie is about six different, seemingly ordinary people and how their paths cross during a two-week period in Toronto, including tales of various Sri Lankan Tamil immigrants.

The festival takes place from June 15 to 23 in Shanghai, China. The producer Vishnu Muralee of Eyecatch Multimedia Inc. and Lenin will be travelling to Shanghai for the world premiere. SIFF is considered to be one of the top 10 film festivals in the world and it is recognized by International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF).

The film is one of 12 films selected out of more than 1600 films from 122 countries to compete for Golden Goblet award. Oscar award winner British director Tom Hooper will lead the jury of 6 others to choose the winner.

Lenin’s directorial debut “1999,” which gave a rare insider’s perspective on the wave of gang violence that shook the Tamil community in Toronto in the 1990s was selected as the one of the “Top 10 Canadian films” at the 2009 Vancouver International Film Festival. Lenin was born in Jaffna, Sri Lanka and raised in Toronto where many of his own experiences provide inspiration for his work.
