The 85th Academy Awards took place earlier this week, and we were excited to see how Ang Lee’s "Life of Pi" would fare. Of particular interest was the "Best Original Song" category, where esteemed Carnatic musician Bombay Jayashri’s song "Pi’s Lullaby" was nominated. Unfortunately, she was beaten by the UK’s Adele, who sang "Skyfall" for the latest James Bond movie.
Had Bombay Jayashri won, it would have been exciting indeed, as it would be the first Tamil-language song to receive an Oscar award. That said, Ang Lee’s movie – which tells the story of a boy from Pondicherry who gets lost at sea – picked up 4 awards. The film had eleven nominations in total, and picked up the awards for Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects and Best Original Score.
