This week’s throwback is a Sridevi classic to celebrate the veteran actress’s return to the screens with "English Vinglish". We’ve chosen ‘Kanne Kalaimaane’ from Balu Mahendra’s 1982 film "Moondram Pirai", starring Sridevi and Kamal Haasan. The movie – which features Sridevi as a mentally traumatised woman rescued from a life of prostitution by Kamal – won both the leads Tamil Nadu State Film Awards for Best Actress and Actor.
A trio of musical greats come together in the lullaby Kanne Kalaimaane which was composed by the ‘Maestro’ Ilaiyaraaja, written by ‘Kaviarasu’ Kannathasan and sung by ‘the Celestial singer’ K J Yesudas. The mix of soft vocals, laidback instrumentals and subtle percussion along with the deeply affectionate lyrics makes Kanne Kalaimaane one of the most memorable Tamil songs of the 80s. Although slightly on the melancholy side, we think this track is perfect for some late night reminiscing!
