British Tamil artist Jaffna bound to launch debut album

After several years of dedication to her accounting profession, British Tamil artist Nisha Sivan decided she was ready to set aside time and savings to focus on her creative aspirations. In 2024 she embarked on her debut devotional album “Pancha Amirtham.”

“ The intention behind this album is to invoke transformational energies that heal and align seekers from every walk of life with love, light and positivity. This sonic journey fuses and balances diverse music styles, transcending the Tamil language in which it is performed for listeners to experience vibrations in resonance with unity.”

The collaborative creation of ‪Kangai Kanagaratnam,‬ a London based multi-instrumental teacher and composer, and her mother Jayantha Sivan, who debuted as the lyricist, was successfully launched last year at the iconic Harrow School Speech Room in London.

Nisha performed songs from her album, aswell as curating an evening comprised of showcase performances, from a series of established artists with assorted styles of South-Asian origin, who all share a true passion for their craft.

She now hopes to embark on an exploration of creative expression with the intention of sharing the joy she finds in the creative process. She’s currently working on recreating the live experience in her motherland, where she’s connecting with Sri Lankan artists who’ve inspired her with their courage and curiosity.

“The idea behind travelling to Jaffna was to explore cultural fusion and the use of arts as a healing medium. I wanted to broaden my experience, collaborating with experimental artists and a new audience who align with belief in unbounded creative potential, which is why this is known as ‘an innovative showcase for the dreamers’.”

This will be the first time the Rap Ceylon (Vaaheesan Rasiya and Thishon Vijayamohan) are performing in their home city since their rapid rise to stardom. Rivega Dance Studio will also be performing national dance forms that have been reimagined for a universal audience.

The free event is being held at the Jaffna Thiruvalluvar Cultural Centre this Saturday, 1st February.
