Raga Room: livestreamed concert series for UK’s Carnatic musicians

As a talented Carnatic Violinist, an avid listener and ardent student of Carnatic music, Kiruthika has dedicated much of her time to music. From performing nationally and internationally both as a soloist and accompanying many established artists, to volunteering and playing for many classical festivals such as the prestigious Darbar Festival and London International Arts Festival, Kiruthika has been actively involved with all Carnatic activity within London and across the UK. She was a member of the national ensemble Tarang and was Orchestra leader for SAMYO (South Asian Music Youth Orchestra) and is currently a member of the band Project 12.

Her latest project is Raga Room, a livestreamed monthly concert series offering a platform for today’s young Carnatic musicians in the UK to perform.

‘I think there is so much potential for musicians and students in the UK and wanted to create a space where the community can come together to share their ideas and grow. Hopefully this is the first step on that journey!’

After a successful kickstarter campaign to raise funds, Kiruthika has announced three concert dates. The first of these takes place on Sunday 19th March in London, featuring the highly talented musicians: Yatheesan Selvakumar (flute), Achuthan Sripathmanathan (violin), Janakan Sri Rangan (mridangam) and Pujenthan Sivagurunathan (ganjira). The seats have now been filled for the first concert.

To catch these concerts you can either register to attend in person, or you can subscribe to the Raga Room YouTube channel to watch live. The chamber concerts take place in an intimate venue and space is limited, so register quickly if you want to attend in person! Entry is free and voluntary donations are welcomed.

Her knowledge for what is happening in the UK along with her frequent visits to India means she has a real understanding of the need for Raga Room and how a gap can be addressed. Her music is a passion she pursues alongside her job as a Management Consultant giving her the key skills necessary to lead and deliver. The Thamarai team wish Kiruthika the very best for this wonderful initiative.
