We recently featured American-Tamil pianist Vijay Iyer on Thamarai after he topped the Rhapsody Jazz Critics’ Poll 2012.
Vijay Iyer is one of the most daringly original jazz artists of his generation. The 2011 Grammy nominee was described by The Village Voice as ‘the most commanding pianist and composer to emerge in recent years‘ and by The New Yorker magazine as one of ‘today’s most important pianists… extravagantly gifted‘.
Iyer and his musical collaborators Marcus Gilmore (drums) and Stephan Crump (bass) have updated the classic jazz piano trio, creating a powerful, cutting-edge new music that is firmly grounded in groove and pulse, but also rhythmically intricate and highly interactive.
Vijay and his trio play the Southbank Centre’s Purcell Room on February 5th, at 7.45pm. Tickets cost £10 and £20 (+ £1.75 booking fee), and can be purchased by clicking here.
