
A Tamil chef has won best in Paris (île-de-France) at “Coupe de France Du Burger 2025” for his burger using French produce.
Tanesh Thanaratnam, whose family originates from Kilinochchi in northern Sri Lanka / Eelam, was born and raised in Paris. He was up against 4 other contenders in the Paris regional finals at the 10th anniversary of the French Burger Cup.
He won best in Paris for his “Le Tissot de La Varenne” burger – A carrot cake-style bun, beef cheek simmered in its own juices, a creamy sauce, rustic Limousin meat, mature black cheddar, candied kumquat, fried carrot tops, and a perfect balance between soft and crispy.
The 2025 French Burger Cup for restaurant professionals, was held on April 2nd at the Snack Show (Porte de Versailles). Out of 270 entrants, 25 were selected to compete. Participants were tasked with creating a bistromatic-style burger within a budget of €6.50 and 25 minutes of preparation time.
The jury of 20 experts included two-Michelin-starred chef Tom Meyer, chose the qualifiers for the grand finale from the 5 regional finals, and overall winner of the national title. Tanesh was also declared 5th best in France.
“My parents fled war in Sri Lanka, and I was born and raised in a rough part of Paris, which was troubled with gangs and violence. The probability for someone from my background winning this competition is zero.”
As a Parisian of Tamil origin, I work three times harder than the locals, and I’m delighted that the hardwork has paid off.”
I had no formal culinary qualification, I had learn on the job. I was 24 when I started this journey, it was late, I was advised to learn from as many chefs as possible. I have now worked in 20 different restaurants in 10 years. I worked my way up from commis to head chef.”
