London based Malaysian Tamil chef, Sugun Gopal, has launched his first cookbook
The founder of Roti King (Pan-Malaysian) and its sister restaurant Gopal’s Corner (Tamil Malaysian), Sugen has championed his native cuisine for over two decades.
His new cook book, titled “Roti King”, pays homage to his family’s recipes and Malaysian roots. Inspired by Malaysia’s vibrant street-food culture and the home-cooked classics of his childhood, Sugen Gopal shares recipes for Roti King favourites.
Pre-launch the cook book has sold over 2,500 copies in the UK and 2,500 in the US.
At Wednesday’s book launch party in Brixton, Sugen and his team prepared dishes from the book. They included;
– Acar Timun (Nonya Spiced Pickle)
– Roti Canai with chicken curry
– Ikan Bakar Sumbat (grilled sea bass wrapped in banana leaf)
– Sayur Masak Chilli Api (a sothy style curry served with jasmine rice)
– Cekodok Pisang (banana fritter served with coconut ice cream)
Born and raised in Ipoh, Malaysia, Sugen’s world famous Roti King was established in London. Its signature dish, Malaysia’s Roti Canai with curry, is served at sites across London (Euston, Battersea, Liverpool Street). This week he opened his Brighton branch, the first location outside of London.
Gopal’s Corner, located in Markethalls Oxford Street, Canary Wharf, Victoria and Paddington, focuses on Malaysian Tamil rice & curry dishes served on Banana leaf.
