Our resident music buff Nish Raj is back with a foot-tapping number for this week’s Track of the Week!
This week’s Track of the Week is from the highly anticipated movie "David" which has been made simultaneously in Tamil and Hindi with direction by Bejoy Nambiar. The Tamil version stars Chiyaan Vikram and Jiiva in lead roles, with a cast of top actors such as Nasser and Tabu, to name a few. What makes this film more interesting is that it holds a total of six music directors, with Anirudh Ravichander of "Kolaveri" fame on that list.
The song I have chosen is called "Theeraathu Poga Poga", composed by Maati Baani, a world music band from Mumbai that is fronted by classical singer Nirali Kartik, who has lent her vocals for this track.
The song starts in a mysterious manner, causing you to wonder whether it will be an upbeat track or a slow, melodious one. But once the guitars and beat kick in, the song switches up a gear, leaving us with a catchy Carnatic fusion track with Western instruments accompanying snappy Indian classical vocals. Within the first minute, the song is in full-swing and it maintains its foot-tapping feel throughout.
Nirali Kartik has done a fine job with her vocals, and at first it’s easy to wonder if Nithyashree Mahadevan is the voice behind the track; there are points where Nirali’s vocals resemble Nithyashree’s. There is also support form French Singer Joyshanti who comes in at various places with some ad-libs, adding a twist to the track.
