Carnatic Bombay Jayashri recovering after aneurysm in London

Celebrated Carnatic vocalist Bombay Jayashri is on the road to recovery after suffering an aneurysm in London.

The 58-year-old singer was to perform two rare shows of Carnatic compositions and improvisations in England after 15 years. The first at London’s South Bank on the 18th March, followed by another at Liverpool’s Tung Auditorium on the 24th March.

The organisers of her tour, Milap, took to their social media to announce the cancelation of her Liverpool show due to Illness.

She reportedly suffered the brain haemorrhage in her hotel room, and was later admitted to a local hospital where she underwent surgery.

Her team took to social media to post a statement to her fans. “The medical interventions have been very effective. Jayashri Ramnath’s road to recovery is on the right track. The NHS staff have been incredible. The Indian government has been by our side every step of the way. We thank everyone for their love, support and prayers.”

Having performed her first concert in 1982, Bombay Jayashri is known for her distinctive vocal range and quality, and her incredibly varied repertoire featuring songs from various Indian languages including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi.

In 2002, Jayashri received a Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the song ‘Vaseegara’. In 2012, she was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Original Song category for ‘Pi’s Lullaby,’ from the film Life of Pi. In 2021, Jayashri was awarded a Padma Shri – India’s fourth highest civilian award.

Just before this incident, she was announced as this year’s recipient of the prestigious Sangeetha Kalanidhi from the Chennai Music Academy, for her melodic and meditative style of singing” besides “training underprivileged children in music and contributing through her art to social causes.”
