The Lebara UK Asian Music Awards took place last night at Wembley Arena, London. The event marked the 10th anniversary of the awards show, and was a star-studded event celebrating the huge amount of talent in the Asian music scene. The renowned singer Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan performed at the event, and there were also performances by Ash King, Shide Boss and Arjun.
We are proud to say that some of the winners had a Southern connection! The internationally-renowned MIA – a.k.a. Maya Arulpragasam – was the recipient of the "Best Video" award for "Bad Girls".
The Raghu Dixit Project saw off tough competition from the likes of Nitin Sawhney and Rumer to win the "Best Alternative Act" award. The band’s frontman, Raghu Dixit who hails from South India, said on his Facebook page "Thanks to each and every fan who stood by us, supported and voted for us. This award goes to each and everyone of you 🙂 This is just the beginning!". Look out for his new album which releases early next year.
London’s very own rising star, Arjun, received the award for "Best Urban Act", and he too thanked his fans and all those who voted for him. The singer also performed his rework of "Why This Kolaveri Di?" – which shot him into the limelight all over the world – as well as a new track called "Take it Back".
