Throwback Thursday #16

Today is Valentine’s Day, the day that celebrates love and is observed by exchanging chocolates, flowers and gifts. There aren’t many South Indian directors who manage to direct a romantic film in a relatively realistic way, but Mani Ratnam and Gautham Vasudev Menon are two who are known for doing this, and doing it well.

It would only be right if I chose a song from one of the most romantic film of recent times, that was released around Valentine’s Day 2010. I’m talking about Gautham Vasudev Menon’s "Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa" which had "Mozart of Madras" A. R. Rahman heading up the music. The film marked a sort of comeback to Tamil cinema for A. R. Rahman after his huge global success with the soundtrack for award-winning film "Slumgdog Millionaire".

The song I have chosen is "Hosanna" which is sung by Vijay Prakash, Blaaze and Suzanne. The song was a hit, especially amongst the youth, and it was the most heavily promoted song from the film. To set the scene for the song, the hero Karthik (played by Simbu) has just laid eyes on his neighbour Jessie (Trisha Krishnan), and has instantaneously fallen in love with her.

Regardless of whether or not you believe in love at first sight, it’s hard not to fall in love with this song at first listen! Check it out below:

Whether or not you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day, we hope you have a great day! What’s your favourite romantic song?
