British-Tamil musician M.I.A. dropped the Matangi Mixtape today, and all we can say is that everyone needs to check this out…NOW! The release was part of designer Kenzo’s show at Paris Fashion Week, and is available to stream online.
Opening with a tribal ululation, this is one piece that has you hooked from the first second. The project features a mash-up of remixes of a number of Indian tracks including "Ghanan Ghanan" from hit Bollywood film "Lagaan", a sample of SP Balasubramaniam’s vocals in "Ithu Oru Ponmaalai Pozhudhu" from 1980 Tamil film "Nizhalgal, a couple of lines of "Ottagatha Kattiko", and even a Hindu prayer! It sounds pretty mad already, but we’re only just getting started – M.I.A.’s vocals haven’t even kicked in yet!
Right from her opening line, the fierce lady oozes sass with a flow that only she can pull off. It’s not clear whether this is material that will be on her album – which has been delayed – or whether this project is entirely separate…but there’s no denying that if this is anything to go by, the album is going to be packed with addictive beats, catchy toplines and truckloads of attitude!
