AR Rahman x Rushil Ranjan
with Abi Sampa and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Friday 24th April at 7:30pm
Saturday 25th April at 7.30pm
Sunday 26th April at 2.30pm
Step into a historic evening as two musical innovators come together to break new ground. Making his momentous and long-awaited Hall debut, the legendary AR Rahman will be in collaboration with pioneering composer and Royal Albert Hall Associate Artist Rushil Ranjan.
Together, they will work to reframe the shared divinity between Eastern and Western classical art forms and will co-compose a brand-new commission, Rangreza रंगरेज़ा, written for fellow Royal Albert Hall Associate Artist Abi Sampa, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and London Voices, conducted byMelvin Tay.
In collaboration with The Sunshine Orchestra. Featuring acclaimed soloists Sarthak Kalyani and Janan Sathiendran – plus acclaimed contemporary dancer Aakash Odedra.
Across the night, audiences will also hear Rahman’s most iconic and classic works from Roja and Guru to 127 Hours and Rockstar.
Audiences can look forward to the maestro himself taking to the stage, accompanied by Ranjan’s signature orchestral arrangements and stagecraft.
Rangreza रंगरेज़ा means ‘colourist’, someone who brings unexpected tones together, and in Sufi tradition, a vision of the Divine as the ultimate artist colouring the universe with its blessings. It reflects both the artistry and the spirituality of this collaboration, as Rahman and Ranjan weave Western and Indian traditions into a vivid musical palette that reaches towards the natural and the divine.
The world premiere of Rangreza रंगरेज़ा is presented with lead support from the Bagri Foundation, and co-commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Toronto’s TO Live and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
