British Tamils to host Pongal in Westminster to mark Tamil Heritage Month on Monday 15th January 2024.

Tamil community groups from across the UK are coming together once again to host the third annual event at the heart of Westminster to mark Tamil Heritage Month, and Thai Pongal – the Tamil Harvest Festival celebrated by over 90 million Tamils across the world.

On Monday 15th January 2024, Church House Westminster will host the 3rd Pongal in Westminster, where the British Tamil community will celebrate with an evening of cultural performances, traditional sweets and festivities, and mark Thai Pongal alongside Members of Parliament and the wider Tamil community.

Church House hosted the first UN Security Council meeting in 1946 and remains the home of the Church of England. The grand Assembly Hall there will reverberate to the sound of Tamil music and the sight of dance in front of a capacity crowd.

In its short history Pongal in Westminster has already become a focal point for Tamil organisations to join hands and deliver impactful community events. The last event had, amongst its guests, the current Deputy Prime Minister, members of the cabinet and shadow cabinet, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, London Assembly members, and civil servants from various government departments.

About Tamil Heritage Month

On 2 December 2021 the London Assembly passed a unanimous motion declaring January as Tamil Heritage Month in recognition of the immense contribution the British Tamil community makes to life in Britain. Several London boroughs with significant Tamil populaces followed suit. The event in Westminster is one among several during the month of January to showcase and celebrate Tamil identity, culture, language, and arts.

Each ticket includes one free Pongal snack box.
