Tamil Teenager signs pro-deal with Barnsley Football club

Following a string of impressive first-team appearances for Barnsley Football Club since his debut in August 2023, 17–year-old all-round central midfielder Vimal Yoganthan has signed a professional contract with the club for two and half years.

Vimal becomes the first professional footballer from the British Tamil community to play in English football.

The midfielder said, “It’s an amazing feeling, it’s everything I’ve worked towards these last couple of years since being at the club.

“I couldn’t have done any of this without the help of the staff, my teammates and my family and I’m excited about the future at Barnsley.”

The tall, six foot three, first year scholar from Chester joined Barnsley at under 16s level after being in Liverpool’s academy. He is a Wales youth international.

Bobby Hassell, the Interim Director of Football commented on the deal: “Vimal joined the club two seasons ago and has since established himself as a star performer for the academy’s 18 and 21s squads. He recently made his debut for the first team and gained praise for his aggressive playing style. Vimal possesses a great attitude and a strong desire to continuously learn and improve.”
