Yesterday, award-winning Carnatic violinist Lalgudi Jayaraman passed away in Chennai at the age of 82. Not only was he an incredibly talented accompanying violinst who shared the stage with leading Carnatic vocalists, Lalgudi Jayaraman was also one of the most well-known and loved solo artistes.
His unique playing style earned its own name – Lalgudi Bani – and he composed many pieces that are popular among performers today.
His disciples include his children Lalgudi GJR Krishnan and Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi, and Carnatic vocalist Bombay Jayashri.
His loss will be felt by Carnatic artistes and audiences alike. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.
