Track of the Week #11

Today’s track of the week is chosen from the film "Naduvala Konjum Pakkatha Kaanom." The comedy-thriller film is filled with a number of twists and turns to ensure the audience are kept glued to their seats. The film stars Vijay Sethubathy, an upcoming actor who also acted in the recent thriller film, "Pizza."

The song I have chosen is "Hey Crazy Penne" sung and written by the Music Director himself – Ved Shanker Sugavanam, an alumnus of KM Music Conservatory, the music education centre inaugrated by AR Rahman’s foundation.

It is a romantic number where the Tanglish (a mix of Tamil and English) lyrics depict the male lead describing his girlfriend in simple and amusing terms, comparing her to a range of things including idli!

Ved Shankar has efficiently used a range of instruments in various parts of the song, with excellent use of the Thavil to keep the rhythm steady without being too heavy with the beats. The music director has used the synthesizer alot for his vocals, but it works well within the track. The melody is catchy, and the instrumental interludes add to the beauty of the track.

There is also a second version of this song sung by the hot and happening Andrea Jermiah titled "Oh Crazy Minnal."

With all these new music directors popping up, it looks like stiff competition for the established music directors in the South Indian Film Industry.

Nish Raj is an avid music and movie fan based in London. He’s also a musician who specialises in percussion of all types, and he claims to be able to make beats out of "nearly anything". We’re yet to test his skills on this…
